KUMON is a world-renowned learning method, created over 60 years ago in Japan, and goes far beyond math and English. KUMON focuses on the development of skills such as confidence, independence, and self-learning that are important to a student's academic and personal life. These skills will allow students to overcome frustration and difficulties in concentration and independence, among others.
This method of learning has been developed for students from the age of 3 to adulthood. The younger the student starts with KUMON, the faster they will acquire these qualities.
Each student will take a diagnostic test to determine their starting point and will get an individual plan, updated daily as they progress.
This method is based on specially designed worksheets to work on the subjects and skills mentioned.
Each student comes to the center twice a week for 30 minutes and receives worksheets as homework for the other five days. It will take about the same amount of time to study the worksheets at home, in a way that the child does not get bored but stays focused and motivated.

My name is Luis, I live in Montreux since 2017 and I am a teacher, with a Master's Degree in Mathematics. I had the opportunity to practice my profession for a year in a public school, and for several years in private study centers related to traditional education.
In January 2020, I joined the KUMON Study Center in Pully as an assistant, where I worked for two years. During this period, I was able to benefit from ongoing training with Instructor Laurence D’Silva, as well as occasional trainings with other KUMON instructors.
As a classically trained teacher, I was blown away by the KUMON method, because we are working on math and English, but more importantly on values and skills that will be useful throughout life. I have now decided to fly on my own wings. As an instructor of a new center, my goal is to maximize the potential of each student, to understand their motivations, and to help them maintain their self-confidence, so that they can manage difficulties in an autonomous way. I will be there to guide them in this path.
Frequently Asked Questions
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.
As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.
